Jesus stood in front of the crowd.
They had heard of his miracles.
Many longed for a miracle for themselves … perhaps their marriage, or the way they felt inside, or to heal a sickness, or fill the empty places loss had left.
Why did you come, Jesus?
That’s a question asked in the crowd that day. Some didn’t believe. Others couldn’t help but believe.
It’s a question many of us have asked. Did Jesus come so that we might have church? Did Jesus come so we could be “good” in the sight of others?
Or is there more to this?
Jesus answered our questions in Luke 4:18-20:
I came to heal the broken hearted.
I came to open the eyes of those who cannot see.
I came to break chains that seemingly cannot be broken.
I came with Good News.
This is Jesus’ mission statement. A fulfillment of the promise shared for generations in Isaiah 61:1-2. At that time, they were waiting for a warrior, but it seemed that God was sending a Healer instead.
What might happen today if we embraced Luke 4:18-20 for ourselves?
What does it look like to have our eyes opened? Our chains broken? A heart mended? Good news taking root in our faith, our thoughts, our lives?
It’s a question asked then. A question I’m posing to you today. A question I asked myself a long time ago.
Luke 4:18-20 wasn’t just for the crowd standing on the dusty streets of Nazareth, but for you and me today.
Do you feel broken? Do you want to be free? Do you sense that these words are for you? What might it mean for Luke 4:18-20 to come alive inside of you?
Today, I want to give you a gift. It’s the Introduction and Chapter One of The Mended Heart: God’s Healing for Your Broken Places.
