“Whew!” she said.
“Suzie, who knew we’d do all the hard work first? I signed up because this sounded like a fun adventure!”
Her message made me smile, but I promise I’m not trying to make this adventure challenging. The reason we do all the hard stuff first is that we don’t want to be burdened on this adventure.
I’m a light packer. If I’m traveling for a couple of days, I pack a carry-on. If I’m traveling for a week, I pack the same carry-on. It’s kind of a joke among some of my friends. When I went to India for 10 days, I packed a carry-on.
Let’s see if Suzie runs out of underwear. There’s no way she could have everything she needs.
I learned a long time ago that we rarely need everything we take on a trip. Hauling our baggage across the nation, or across the world, creates additional problems.
Sure, those ten pair of shoes might come in handy, but not when you check your bags and they don’t make it all the way to your destination. Sure, it’s awesome to have all those full-size products, but not when you have to leave most of them at TSA.
Traveling light allows me to have my carry-on with me at all times. I always know where it is. It forces me to bring what I need. It allows me to worry about one thing, rather than trying to manage travel, getting to my gate, hauling bags to the car.
I’ve learned some tricks — like, choosing items that I can roll in a tight ball and simply shake them out. Some of my prettiest clothes are chosen because of their travel-worthy status.
I want to move to the fun stuff in this 21-Day Adventure, too. But I also want us to travel light.
I don’t think that we need to be burdened, when there’s so much better stuff waiting to pack in.
I hope that you’ll have as much room as possible, because God will speak to you. He’s going to ask you to tuck in a little compassion here, a little empathy there, some intentional gratitude that got lost along the way. When we do the hard work first, we are free to pick those things up and tuck them in our hearts, right where they belong.
Next week we’ll look at some amazing (and fun) ways to live a life of thank you. I’m excited about that.
But first, we unpack.
Today I’ll share a Facebook Live broadcast on my FB ministry page. We’ll take a little deeper look at what it means to travel light emotionally so that we have just what we need spiritually.
What do you need to do to join in the live broadcast?
- Like the ministry FB page.
- Set your notifications to receive updates.
- Show up at 2:30 CT on the FB ministry page.
It won’t be longer than 8 to 10 minutes. Grab your Bible. We’ll look at a scripture or two together. If you have questions, I’ll answer them either during the broadcast or later. I’ll look at all of your comments. I promise.
What does it look like for you to travel light? Why might that be important?
If you miss the live broadcast, I’ll post it tomorrow!
